Frequently Asked Questions

How does DocLens work?

DocLens accesses Google Docs' revision history to reconstruct the writing process. It shows you every edit, insertion, and deletion that happened during the document's creation. All analysis happens in your browser—document content is never sent to our servers.

Can DocLens detect AI writing or plagiarism?

DocLens is not designed to detect AI usage or plagiarism. It provides factual information about the writing process—like when sessions occurred, where large blocks of text were inserted, and how much revision happened. Teachers interpret this information in context with other assessment factors.

What data does DocLens collect?

DocLens collects minimal data. We store your account information and track which documents you've exported (document ID only, not content) to prevent duplicate exports. All document analysis happens locally in your browser. We never see or store student work, grades, or comments.

Do I need edit access to the document?

Yes. DocLens requires edit access to view revision history. If students share documents with "Can edit" permissions, you'll be able to use DocLens on those documents.

Does this work with Google Classroom?

Yes! If students submit Google Docs through Classroom and you have edit access, you can use DocLens on those documents. Open the document from Classroom and click the DocLens button.

What's the difference between "Try Free" and "Sign Up Now"?

"Try Free for 14 Days" gives you full access with no credit card required. After 14 days, you'll be prompted to subscribe. "Sign Up Now" requires a credit card upfront and starts your subscription immediately, but you can cancel anytime with no penalty. Both options give you full access to all features.

What happens after my free trial?

After 14 days, you'll be prompted to subscribe. Your trial includes full access to all features. If you choose not to subscribe, you won't lose any data—you just won't be able to analyze new documents or export grades until you subscribe.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account page. You'll retain access until the end of your current billing period.

Is there a discount for teachers?

Our standard pricing of $5/month or $40/year is already teacher-focused and affordable. For schools and districts looking to license DocLens for multiple teachers, we offer volume pricing. Contact us at jeremiah@doclens.net for a quote.

Privacy Policy

Core Privacy Principles

No document data is collected by or sent to any remote service by the extension. All document analysis happens locally in your browser. Document content, revision history, and analysis results never leave your computer unless you explicitly choose to export grades and comments to Google Sheets.

What Data We Collect

DocLens collects minimal data to provide the service:

  • Your email address for account management and subscription purposes
  • A unique browser identifier for free trial and subscription management
  • Document IDs (not content) of documents you've exported to prevent duplicate exports

We do not collect:

  • Document content or text
  • Revision history data
  • Student information or email addresses
  • Grades or comments you enter
  • Analysis results or writing pattern data

How We Use Your Data

We use your email address solely for:

  • Managing your account and subscription
  • Tracking your free trial period
  • Sending important service updates (we do not send marketing emails)

Document IDs are used only to prevent accidental duplicate exports to Google Sheets.

Third-Party Sharing

We never share, sell, or provide your personal information to third parties for marketing purposes. Your email address and account data remain private and are used only for providing the DocLens service.

Analytics

DocLens uses Google Analytics with anonymized data that excludes personally identifiable information. This helps us understand how teachers use the extension to improve the product.

Access Controls

DocLens only works on Google Docs where you have edit permissions. The extension uses Google's standard OAuth authentication to access documents. You remain in full control of which documents you analyze.

Data Security

Because all document analysis happens locally in your browser, your students' work is protected by design. We follow industry-standard security practices for the minimal account data we do store.

School & District Privacy Agreements

Custom Data Privacy Agreements are available for school districts that require specific privacy terms. Contact jeremiah@doclens.net for district-specific privacy agreements.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your account data at any time
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Cancel your subscription without penalty

To exercise these rights, contact us at jeremiah@doclens.net.

Developer Access

No one, including DocLens developers, has access to any document you analyze or its revision history. All processing happens entirely on your computer.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes via email. Continued use of DocLens after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
